The Unseen- Puppet Show (Part 5)

“I had a desire to prove to myself that I was actually in control – that I wasn’t a puppet.”

  • Sean Parker

“Let’s pick up the team.” Kelly said, deeply impressed as she drove back to the parking lot where Croft, Petra, and Ben where waiting. “It looks like Croft found a new girl.”

“No that would be Ben.” Voltaire said smiling.

Ben climbed into the car as he greeted Kelly who stared at him in surprise. Kelly said “it is you. You are not like… I’m sorry. Sorry, I assumed you were… sorry.”

“I am not a woman,” Ben said smiling. “Thanks though.”

“You’re not?” Kelly asked in surprise.

“A lot of people think I am. I am too pretty for my own good.”

Kelly quickly left the car to apologize to Croft and Petra for making them wait, while Ben sat down next to Voltaire. The two men sat quietly together in the car for several awkward minutes of silence.

“Good to see you too,” Ben said angrily.

“I thought that went without saying,” Voltaire said as he took Ben’s hand and give it an affectionate squeeze. “Are you still with me Ben?”

“Who do you need me to speak with?” Ben asked as he smiled at everything Voltaire would not say, but meant sincerity.

“I need you to talk to Fable.” Voltaire said “we’re going to recruit him. The way he rejects his potential makes me think he’ll respond more to someone who does not have any.”

“Voltaire, this is just one more thing I hate about my job.” Ben said “This guy hates himself so you want to play on that so you can recruit him for Drusilla? Voltaire, I cannot do this anymore, not after what happened with… with Judy.”

“You survived.” Voltaire said gently “you survived a lot.”

“You survived too and here we are.” Ben said quietly as his grip on Voltaire’s hand tightened. He shook his head and said “I am sorry. I would do anything for you, but not this.”

“Ben… I need you to stand by me.” Voltaire said as he pulled Ben into an embrace. However, Ben pulled away from Voltaire’s grip while shaking his head weakly.

“I won’t make you do it then,” Voltaire whispered as he released Ben from his arms. The two men shook hands before Ben opened the door and left the car.
