“It takes two to speak the truth: one to speak, and other to hear.”
- Henry David Thoreau
Focus, Petra told herself and she returned to view the screens. There was also a carnival being monitored, but then there was also a group of screens not showing anything or anyone. Petra looked down at the papers on the table, they were about Voltaire. Petra perused through them and realized Voltaire and Ben had gone missing. Three had been unable to find either one of them.
I have to get out of here, Petra thought. She was about to leave when the phone rang. Petra ran out into the office and looked at the name on the phone… it was Drusilla. She was about to leave when she heard footsteps approaching the office. It could have been Croft, but it also could have been Three. Petra reacted on instinct. She decided to hide in the safe, but as she climbed in, she hit her head on the top of the door frame, knocking her back, and causing her hearing aid to fall to the ground as she scrambled into the vault.
Petra left the vault door partly open so she could breathe. She watched the office door open and Three walked in to pick up the phone. To Petra’s surprise she could not hear his conversation and realized she no longer had her hearing aid. Petra opened the door a bit more and caught a glimpse of Three leaning against his desk with the phone in his hand. His eyes were focused on his papers so he did not see her, and Petra could not read his lips at her angle.
He was going to see the hearing aid, Petra thought. She wished her arms were smaller so she could reach out without having to open the door halfway. Petra was jealous of Croft who was just as muscular as Petra, but while Petra resembled a body builder, Croft was built like a runner with compacted muscles. She could squeeze in and out at an abnormal speed, but she would also burn her hand off. Petra held up her portable drill. I could just leave and put the drill into his brain, Petra thought… it would be just like old times, but Croft would not be happy. Petra considered how sad she was when Judy died, even if people are jerks, it was still sad when they died, she concluded.
Opening the door up a crack, she watched Three talk for half an hour until he finally turned away from Petra’s vantage point. Petra opened the door and grabbed her hearing aid before hiding back inside the vault with door slightly ajar. Petra rubbed her hearing aid on her dress and put it back into her ear so she could catch the end of his conversation.
“Even that French girl?” Three asked Drusilla. “You seemed to care about her… oh, I see so she was also a failure… okay, as you wish, then we will round her up too.”
What were they talking about? Petra thought as she pressed her face to the crack between the door and the frame. They probably were talking about the plan while I did not have my hearing aid thought Petra, this is just my luck. Three hung up the phone.
